I threw caution to the winds and put in my 7.4mm eyepiece so we are now looking at magnification approaching x 172 (1400 miles above the Moon), and to my amazement it came out. Exposure was 1/60 at F 2.9.

Images of the Transit of Mercury taken by Derek Maskell. Particularly nice is the image at 10:29 UT showing the egress slightly after 3rd contact.

7th May 2003 saw a Transit of Mercury, and good weather was had in the Cotswolds. This image was taken by John Fletcher (click on the picture for a bigger view in a new window). Details and more pictures on Johns website:  http://www.jfmto.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/transit_mer.htm

Whist on holiday in Devon, Martin Sinton was able to see and capture pictures of a rare effect, known as a Sun Pillar.

There have been a number of occultations of the planets Jupiter and Saturn over the last few months, but all so far were clouded out in the Cotswolds. The last opportunity this year was on the 16th April, and luckily the sky was cloudless. Many CAS Members have witnessed this event, and this image was taken by John Fletcher, showing the Moon illuminated by Earthshine. Saturn is overexposed to capture four of its moons; Titan, Tethys, Rhea, and Dione.
We have set up a special page with images and movies of 1998 WT24 as it shot through the skies in December 2001. Click Here
Note that there are a few large images so be patient when waiting for the page to download.
