Clear skies were most welcome for another successful evening at the
Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetland Trust center. Four planets, the moon and a
variety of clusters and nebulae were enjoyed by those who braved the cold.
Many thanks to the members who brought telescopes on the night.
Rose Leicester was awarded the Dan Turton Trophy, for the best astronomical
images. John Harris was awarded the Robin Townley Trophy, for the member who
has contributed most to the promotion and general advancement of the
society's activities.

Great entries by the cub-scouts. The
winner received a book about the stars and planets, and a tub of Mars Mud. The
two runners up received a book each containing cardboard kits of spacecraft such
as the Space Shuttle, a tub of Mars Mud each, and slides of the Moon. See all
the finalists here.
Voting in this years awards was very close, and unprecedently one man won both awards. Congratulations to Derek Maskell on his fine achievements.
20th Anniversary Lecture - An Evening With John Dobson
19th September 2002 saw astronomers from around the country converge on Shurdington Social Centre for an "Evening with John Dobson". John wowed the audience with his steady-state theory of cosmology, and related many tales of his life, including his 'Dobsonian' telescope invention and encouraging public astronomy through the Sidewalk Astronomers
In September an observing weekend at Bracelands Campsite in the Forest of Dean had wet weather on the Friday but
good observing was had on Saturday night.
Summer BBQ, despite rain during the day, a fine evening ensued. And even a chance for a little Astronomy.
For the occultation of Saturn on Tuesday 16th April 2002 a viewing evening was held at Whiteshill Scout hut, in conjunction with the Whiteshill Cub Scout pack.

February 9th and 10th saw the 2002 Astrofest in London. Cotswold AS had a small presentation of work on display
in the Societies Room. This was certainly the place to be to view the broadest range of equipment in the flesh on
a single day.
Following their great images and movies of 1998 WT24, members Alan Cahill and John Rock featured on February 2002 edition of
Final Frontier
